Prioritizing Mental Wellness in Every Community
Mental health affects everyone — but not everyone has equal access to the support they need. This month is recognized as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the unique mental health challenges that racial and ethnic minority communities often face in the United States.
Founded in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, a tireless advocate for mental health equity, this month encourages open conversations, reduces stigma, and highlights the urgent need for culturally competent care.
Why This Month Matters
While mental health conditions don’t discriminate, the path to healing can look very different depending on your background. Minority communities often face additional barriers to mental health support, including:
These barriers can discourage people from seeking help — or even recognizing they need it.
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
Whether you’re facing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or just feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to remember you are not alone. Mental health is just as vital as physical health, and seeking support is a courageous and proactive step.
At our practice, we believe that true health means supporting the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. We encourage everyone to check in with themselves and the people they love. If something feels off, don’t wait. Reach out.
National Resources for Mental Health Support
If you or someone you know is struggling and needs help, here are some national organizations offering support — often for free or low cost:
Let’s use this month to reflect, listen, and learn. If you are part of a minority community, know that your mental health matters and healing is possible. If you’re an ally, be a voice for access, equity, and compassion. We are here to support you — this month and every month.

Vaccines are essential tools in preventing serious illnesses, yet there are many myths surrounding them. A common misconception is that vaccines are unsafe or cause the illness they aim to prevent. In reality, vaccines undergo rigorous testing to ensure safety and are made from either inactivated or weakened forms of pathogens — which cannot cause the disease. In fact, it’s actually impossible for vaccines to cause the disease that they are designed to prevent.
Most vaccines, such as COVID-19 and injectable influenza (flu), do not have any whole virus particles in them. In other words, they are not inactivated or weakened forms of pathogens. Rather, these vaccines contain only the antigenic proteins (proteins that normally live on the surface of the virus), which serve to identify the virus particle as foreign. These foreign proteins are then seen by the body’s immune system as invaders, which causes the immune system to form antibodies against the surface proteins. When you are exposed to a real live virus in the future, your body has already prepared antibodies that will identify the virus particles based on their surface proteins, causing the immune system to kill them.
Some people are hesitant when it comes to getting vaccinated due to concerns over side effects or distrust in health systems. However, most side effects (like soreness) are mild and temporary. Because these foreign proteins are seen by the immune system as invaders, the immune system is activated by the vaccine. Sometimes, this can result in a person feeling the symptoms of the real illness: fever, chills, body aches, or fatigue. But these symptoms are always milder than what the actual live virus would cause; plus they are short-lived and temporary. Getting vaccinated not only protects the individual, but also builds what we call “herd immunity,” shielding the whole population from outbreaks. The more individuals in the “herd” who are immune to a virus, the less likely that virus is to spread throughout the population. Herd immunity is the best way to eliminate a virus from the population. Lack of herd immunity is why, for many decades, illnesses like polio or measles were sicknesses of the past. Unfortunately, because of vaccine reluctance, these viruses are making a comeback in our population.
Being aware of misinformation is key. Reliable sources, like the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control, provide scientifically backed information to debunk myths and help you make informed health decisions.
Myth: Vaccines cause autism or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Fact: There’s no scientific link between vaccines and autism or SIDS. These diagnoses often coincide with vaccination ages, but rigorous studies have shown vaccines are safe, and serious side effects are extremely rare. Diseases, like measles and polio, are far more dangerous without vaccines.
Myth: You can get COVID-19 from the vaccine.
Fact: COVID-19 vaccines don’t contain a live virus, so they can’t give you COVID. Instead, they build immunity safely over time, as outlined above.
Myth: It’s better to get diseases naturally than through vaccines.
Fact: Vaccine-preventable diseases can cause serious harm, whereas vaccines provide safe immunity without these risks. Getting actual COVID-19 is far more dangerous than the potential side effects of the vaccine.
By debunking these myths, we hope to encourage informed decisions about vaccinations. Vaccines are safe, essential tools for keeping our communities healthy. For more details, check out the World Health Organization’s vaccine Q&A.
Viracid combines powerful nutrients and botanical extracts designed to support your immune system, especially during cold and flu season.
Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense, and it’s constantly working to protect you. To perform at its best it needs the right nutrients. Deficiencies can weaken immune function, but by adding immune-boosting nutrients you can help strengthen your body’s natural defenses.
Viracid helps enhance immune cell activity, boosting antibody production and natural killer (NK) cells, which fight infections. It also supports T-cell activation and promotes healthy thymus gland function, your primary lymphatic organ where T lymphocytes mature and multiply. Plus, Viracid can soothe throat discomfort, reduce nasal congestion and help maintain a healthy inflammatory balance by increasing antioxidants throughout the body.

How to Use:
This large population-based, retrospective cohort study found a significant association between hormone therapy use and a smaller biological aging discrepancy in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, this association was more evident in women with a disadvantaged socioeconomic position. In addition, the analysis showed that biological age discrepancy due to hormone therapy decreased mortality risk, especially for cardiovascular disease mortality. Visit the full article here.

The fall and winter months don’t have to mean a harsh flu season. Now is the perfect time to start boosting your immune system in preparation for the colder months ahead. Vitamin E, a common skincare ingredient, has potential relationships with enhanced immune operation, from infection protection to improved vaccine response. The high-antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities of vitamin E make it a great addition to your supplement routine. To achieve the full benefits of vitamin E, Dr. Farnesi recommends you take a mixture of tocopherols and tocotrienols. Most inexpensive Vitamin E supplements only contain the d-alpha-tocopherol form. But to get the full effect, and not cause harm, you also want the beta, gamma and delta forms of tocopherols and tocotrienols. If you only get one form, studies show you can cause harm by blocking the benefits of the other forms. Get ready for colder months and check out our article to learn more!
